Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a holistic healthcare system with a history spanning thousands of years. Originating in China, acupuncture continues to evolve as a safe and effective treatment method. It involves inserting fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body to relieve pain, promote healing, and restore balance.

According to TCM philosophy, health depends on the smooth flow of vital energy, known as Qi, through a network of channels beneath the skin. When Qi becomes blocked due to factors such as stress, injury, emotional imbalances, or illness, discomfort and disease can occur. Acupuncture works to unblock and regulate Qi, supporting the body’s natural healing processes and enhancing overall well-being.

Benefits of Acupuncture

Acupuncture is widely recognised for its ability to relieve pain and support overall health. It is used to prevent disease, strengthen the body’s resilience, and address a wide range of physical and emotional concerns. Acupuncture can be integrated with conventional medicine to assist in treating both acute and chronic conditions, offering a holistic approach to wellness.

Rather than solely targeting symptoms, acupuncture identifies underlying causes of illness, restoring balance and promoting long-term health. It acknowledges the connection between physical, mental, and emotional well-being, treating the individual as a whole.

A growing body of clinical research supports the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating various health concerns. Common conditions for which people seek acupuncture treatment include:

  • Women’s health and fertility support
  • Stress, anxiety, and depression
  • Insomnia and sleep disorders
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Muscular, skeletal, and joint pain
  • Digestive issues, such as constipation, IBS and heartburn

What to Expect During an Acupuncture Session

During your first session, I will conduct a comprehensive consultation, asking detailed questions about your health, lifestyle, and medical history. Some questions may seem unrelated to your primary concern, but they are essential for an accurate TCM diagnosis. I will also use diagnostic techniques such as pulse and tongue examination to create a personalised treatment plan.

Once the diagnosis is established, I will gently insert ultra-fine, sterile, single-use needles into specific acupuncture points. These needles are left in place for a designated period to allow the treatment to take effect. Many people experience relaxation and relief after just one session, but for long-standing conditions, a series of 4-10 treatments is typically recommended.

I offer an initial consultation and treatment session to assess your needs and create a tailored plan for your well-being.
