Breech Presentation and Moxibustion
Moxibustion is a gentle technique often used alongside acupuncture to support babies in a breech position. It involves warming a specific acupuncture point on the foot and is typically offered between 34 and 36 weeks of pregnancy.
This treatment may encourage foetal movement and support the baby to turn naturally into a head-down position. Where appropriate, you will also be shown how to safely continue moxibustion at home. Many women choose this natural approach as part of their care when a baby is breech.
Pre-Birth Acupuncture: Preparing for Labour
From 36 weeks, pre-birth acupuncture is commonly used to help prepare the body for labour in a gradual and supportive way. Rather than stimulating labour, these treatments focus on priming the body so that labour may begin and progress more smoothly when the time is right.
Drawing on established pregnancy acupuncture protocols, including those developed by Debra Betts, pre-birth treatments aim to:
- Support cervical ripening and softening
- Encourage effective uterine function
- Promote optimal foetal positioning
- Support the body’s natural hormonal balance
- Calm the nervous system and reduce tension
By supporting relaxation and physiological readiness, pre-birth acupuncture may help the body respond more efficiently once labour begins.
Many women also experience physical tension in late pregnancy, particularly in the neck, shoulders and lower back. Where appropriate, a short massage may be included as part of your session to support comfort and relaxation.
Acupuncture Support When Preparing for a Medical Induction
When a medical induction has been recommended or scheduled, acupuncture can offer focused support in the days leading up to the induction process.
Induction-support acupuncture may help to:
- Encourage cervical readiness prior to induction
- Support the body’s natural labour hormones
- Promote uterine efficiency once labour begins
- Reduce stress, fear and anticipatory tension
- Support emotional wellbeing during decision-making and waiting
These treatments are adapted to your individual circumstances, gestation and induction plan, and are intended to work alongside medical care rather than replace it.
Acupuncture at this stage can help you feel more grounded, supported and prepared as you approach the induction process.
Recent research supports the effectiveness of acupuncture in improving outcomes for women undergoing labour induction. A study found that acupuncture significantly enhanced cervical readiness and reduced the need for medical intervention (ScienceDirect, 2024).
Acupuncture for the Postnatal Period: Rest, Recover and Rejuvenate
What Is the Golden Month?
In many Eastern cultures, the first month after birth is known as the “golden month.” During this time, new mothers are encouraged to focus fully on caring for their baby, while receiving care and support themselves.
According to Chinese Medicine, appropriate support during this important recovery period may help protect long-term health and wellbeing and reduce the likelihood of ongoing imbalances later in life.
Why Choose Postnatal Acupuncture?
Postnatal acupuncture offers gentle, natural support following childbirth. Treatments are designed to support recovery, restore balance and nurture both physical and emotional wellbeing during this demanding transition.
A commonly recommended treatment is Mother Warming, a traditional moxibustion therapy typically offered from 4–6 days after birth, where appropriate. This nurturing treatment is traditionally used to:
- Support energy levels
- Aid the body’s natural recovery after childbirth
- Promote warmth, circulation and vitality
Key Benefits of Postnatal Acupuncture
Postnatal acupuncture may help support recovery from a range of common post-birth concerns, including:
- Mastitis: May help reduce inflammation and discomfort
- Back Pain: Supports relief from postural and physical strain
- Urinary Stress Incontinence: Helps support pelvic floor recovery
- Low Mood, Anxiety or Emotional Upset: Encourages emotional balance and relaxation
Treatments are always tailored to your individual needs, helping you feel supported, replenished and cared for during the postnatal period.
